Background

The Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama moved to a new building that did not have a clear path to their door from the lobby. Within the location, they also wanted to open a store and create a “hang out area” with seating for girls that may be waiting before or after meetings. They partnered with us, requesting to do fun graphics that would help guide people to the correct door, and then brighten up some spaces within. They wanted to make sure that their space represented how Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Reasoning

Take a boring office space and make it fun and exciting for girls participating in all levels of the scouts.

Challenges

The office space has lots of areas to cover, but we need to be conscious of their non-profit budget. We also wanted to make sure we represented all abilities and skin tones for an all-inclusive approach. The client also wanted to make sure to quickly get across that the Girl Scouts is about more than just cookies, such as featuring S.T.E.M. activities.

Solution

We used branding guidelines, badge art, and cookie illustrations provided by the Girl Scouts of America to expand on. Choosing some stock illustrations enabled us to fill in with custom illustrations as needed to stay within budget.

For the entrance, we choose to create a fun outdoor scene that covers activities from science to survival skills. The characters represent all levels of the scouts, including adult volunteers. We pulled the vinyl down on the floor at an angle to help create a visual arrow between it and the horizon to point to their entrance door. The branding guidelines aided in the wording featured in the speech bubbles.

For the lobby, the wall graphics help create a space for girls to hang out. A TV will eventually be added to the right-hand wall.

Working with a local vendor, we had the graphics printed on vinyl and applied to the spaces. The vinyl is more durable and lasting than paint, but can easily be removed in the future if needed—especially in the case of adding or removing cookies that are offered.
